Founder & President, CFA
Warren Barnett is the founder and President, and Portfolio Manager for Barnett & Company. He was associated with the investment banking firm of Kidder, Peabody & Company and the investment counseling firm of Davidge & Company in Washington before returning to Chattanooga to accept a position in the trust department of a local bank. Perceiving the local need for the type of firms with which he was associated in Washington, he established Barnett & Company in 1983. He obtained the Chartered Financial Analyst professional designation from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts, Charlottesville, Virginia in 1986. Mr. Barnett graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and his Master of Business Administration degree in Finance from the Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University.
Vice President, CFA
Chris Hopkins is the Vice President and Portfolio Manager for Barnett & Company. He is a native of Whittier, California and has lived in Chattanooga since 1988. He began his career in finance at Merrill Lynch, following twenty years in manufacturing management. Mr. Hopkins joined Barnett & Company in 2004. He is an adjunct professor of Finance at UTC, and serves on the Finance Advisory Board of the College of Business Administration. He writes a weekly column for the Chattanooga Times Free Press on finance and economics, and appears regularly on WDEF’s News 12 This Morning on the Dollars and Sense program. He is a member of the CFA Societies of East Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as the National Association for Business Economics and the American Economic Association. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst professional designation and is a past president of the CFA Society of Chattanooga. Mr. Hopkins received Bachelor’s degrees in Physics and Economics from California State University at Fullerton, and earned his MBA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Portfolio Manager, CFP®
George Bryant is a Portfolio Manager for Barnett & Company. He has been in the investment and financial planning arena since 1990. He has facilitated as a financial planner, licensed as an insurance agent, and stockbroker. Mr. Bryant obtained his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation in 1994. He served as a portfolio manager for a trust department in a local regional bank and several Registered Investment Advisors. Since 1994, he has managed accounts for individual, not-for-profits, foundation, and retirement plans. Mr. Bryant received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Wofford College.
Investment Advisor Representative, CPA, ChFC
Paul Jacobs, CPA, ChFC, is an Investment Advisor Representative for Barnett & Company. He is orginally from Ohio, but has called Chattanooga home since 1975. He joined a “Big 8” accounting firm in Atlanta where one of his responsibilities was to perform compliance audits on the firm’s closely held business clients. As a result of this experience and the passage of ERISA in 1974, he joined one of the country’s top 10 employee benefit firms as a Regional Group and Pension manager serving southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia. For the 35 plus years prior to joining Barnett and Company, Mr. Jacobs was in private practice providing his clients financial services through strategic partnerships with local, regional, and national firms in the area of separate account management, asset allocation, retirement plan distribution strategies and financial planning. He has been active in both industry and community organizations serving on several boards including the Cherokee Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Allocations Committee of the United Way, board member and past president of The Chambliss Center for Children, and a member of the Downtown Club of Rotary International. He is a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church where he serves as a deacon. Mr. Jacobs received his degree in Accounting from Georgia State University.
Yvonne Hobbs is Administrative Assistant for Barnett & Company and manages client administrative services for the firm. She is a Harrison, Tennessee resident and has lived in the Chattanooga area her entire life. She has been employed in the banking sector since 1994 with both large corporate and small community banks. Mrs. Hobbs received an Associate’s Degree in Computer Technology from Chattanooga College in 1992.
Director of Research
Jud Ferguson is the Director of Research for Barnett & Company. He has over 40 years of experience covering all facets of the financial industry. He received the Chartered Financial Analyst professional designation in 1979 and is Treasurer of the CFA Society of East Tennessee and is also a past president of the Estate Planning Council of Chattanooga. Mr. Ferguson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Rutgers University and his Master of Business Administration degree from Auburn University at Montgomery.
Vice President of Operations
Jennifer Hairston joined Barnett & Company in February 2016. Her responsibilities include operations, financial planning, and administration. She brings seven years of working experience in multiple areas of the Registered Investment Advisory industry. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance, a Master’s degree in Economics, and a Master’s degree in Family Financial Planning from the University of Alabama. In addition, she is an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama teaching an online course on creating financial plans. She resides in Chattanooga, TN.
Director of Marketing / Trader
Mary Chastain is the Marketing Director and Equity Trader for Barnett & Company. She has worked in the financial industry since 1994 as an Administrative Assistant, Operations Specialist and Trader. She is originally from Missouri, and currently resides in Chattanooga, TN. Ms. Chastain received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Walden University.
Research Analyst / Trader
John Loehle is a Distressed Debt & Equity Research Analysts and Trader for Barnett & Company. His roles are to provide investigative equity research and credit research support. Additionally, he is in charge of equity and high yield/distressed fixed income trading on a daily basis. His experience in the financial industry include an internship at Galtere, Ltd. (a macro commodity hedge fund in New York, NY) and a sell-side analyst internship at Avondale Partners, LLC (an investment bank in Nashville, TN). He is currently a 2016 Level III Candidate in the CFA Program and a Level II candidate in the CAIA program and has the FINRA Series 65 license. Mr. Loehle received a degree in Finance - Summa Cum Laude from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is a Coca-Cola Scholar, AXA Scholar, Lowe’s Scholar, and Toyota Scholar for his contributions in community service.
Elizabeth Murphy-Spivey is the Receptionist for Barnett & Company. She is originally from upstate New York, but has lived in the South for most of her life. She graduated with a B.A. in Music (Vocal Performance) from Bryan College in 2003 and spent several years touring with singing groups and performing onstage before pursuing a career in office administration. She has been part of the Barnett and Company team since December of 2016.
